Sen. Barack Obama is irked that his Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain, supports most of President Bush's positions yet still bills himself as "the original maverick."
"You can't be a maverick when politically it's working for you and then not a maverick when it doesn't work for you," Obama complains.
Sure you can. That's what a maverick does - the unexpected. But McCain is wrong that he's the original. That honor goes to Sam Maverick, the early Texas rancher who refused to brand his cattle. An unbranded cow began to be called a maverick, and soon the term applied to someone whose independence frustrates those who expect conformity.
As the presumed Republican nominee, McCain's maverick ads signal that he will try to make the right choice without worrying about his party brand.
