Tampa Bay is Florida's largest open estuary and as such plays an important role in the fishery that exists along the west coast of Florida, as well as the economic well-being of our area. Twenty-four years ago, when Frank Sargeant took up a pen at The Tampa Tribune, the state of the bay was not good. He immediately grasped the situation and used his columns to improve Tampa Bay.
In his "last column" he thanked numerous individuals and groups for their leadership in improving the Bay. However, it is Frank Sargeant who deserves the accolades for skillfully using his pen to lay out the problems along with the solutions to turning things around for the bay. From supporting the ELAPP referendums for shoreline protections to explaining the importance of sea grasses for the health of the bay to advocating a need to control commercial as well as recreational fishing - and the list goes on and on - Sargeant was always there!
Thank you, Frank Sargeant. You truly made a difference. Our Tampa Bay is making a comeback and you led the way!
