Monday afternoon the Indian Beach area of Sarasota was soaked for hours by a dying thunderstorm. Tuesday, on my predawn bicycle ride through the neighborhood, three sprinkler systems were watering (drowning) lawns. It's a given that these are automatic watering systems which take no account of moisture in the soil. Therein lies a small part of our water conservation problem.
More than likely most automatic sprinkler systems don't have soil-moisture sensors which would keep the system from operating when not needed. The amount of water wasted has to be great. This is a problem which could be addressed by any of our governmental agencies - city, county or state - by requiring all new systems to have controlling moisture sensors. For existing systems a credit arrangement could be devised for conversion with payment coming from future water savings by the residence.
