The Rays made a move to bolster their tired bullpen today by acquiring right-handed reliever Chad Bradford from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for a player to be named. Bradford is expected to join the Rays in Seattle on Friday, when a corresponding roster move will be made.
Bradford, 33, is 3-3 with a 2.45 ERA in 47 appearances for Baltimore this year. He leads all major league relievers with a 4.98 groundball-to-flyball ratio. The 11-year veteran has a career record of 34-28 with 11 saves and a 3.31 ERA while pitching for the Chicago White Sox (1998-2000), Oakland Athletics (2001-04), Boston Red Sox (2005), New York Mets (2006) and Orioles (2007-08).
Bradford has reached the playoffs in six seasons (2000-03, 2005-06) and hasn't allowed a run in 17 postseason games.
The Mississippi native was drafted by the White Sox in the 13th round of the 1996 First-Year Player Draft.
The Rays have been looking for another reliever to add to the bullpen. With the recent rash of short outings by their starters, including Scott Kazmir's 4 1/3 innings performance Wednesday, the relievers have been overworked.
