Redman To Start Falcons' Preseason Opener

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. - Chris Redman has edged rookie Matt Ryan and will start at quarterback in the Atlanta Falcons' preseason opener Saturday night at Jacksonville.

Based on how often he has worked with the first-team offense in training camp, Ryan, the NFL's No. 3 overall draft pick, would likely be the first quarterback to replace Redman in the exhibition game.

D.J. Shockley and Joey Harrington are essentially battling for the third-string job, but first-year coach Mike Smith wants all four quarterbacks to play against the Jaguars.

BEARS: First-round draft pick Chris Williams had surgery to repair a herniated disk in his lower back.

Williams was expected to start at left tackle, but those plans went awry when he left the Bears' second practice because of stiffness.

He's been sidelined ever since but remains on the 53-man roster.

BILLS: Defensive end Derrick Jones signed with Buffalo on Thursday, two months after he was released by Atlanta.

To make room for Jones on their roster, the Bills placed rookie linebacker Alvin Bowen on the waived-injured list.

BRONCOS: Rookie running back Ryan Torain is expected to miss about three months after breaking a bone in his left elbow. Coach Mike Shanahan said Torain would need surgery.

BROWNS: Rookie linebacker Beau Bell had arthroscopic surgery to remove loose cartilage from behind his right kneecap. Cleveland expects Bell to be sidelined four to six weeks.

JETS: Tight end A.J. Schable was taken from the field on a stretcher after a head-to-head hit with 12 minutes left in Thursday's preseason game.

Schable was knocked backward by Cleveland offensive lineman Cliff Louis while trying to make a tackle on a kickoff return. He remained on the field in a curled-up position until trainers turned him on his back, then gently placed him on a stretcher.

Schable was immobilized and carted away. Schable gave a thumbs-up with his left hand as he was being wheeled off the field.

PANTHERS: Waived tackle Charles Spencer and re-signed offensive lineman Rueben Riley. Coach John Fox said Spencer was let go because of "conditioning and weight."
