LAKELAND - A 26-year-old woman died Sunday afternoon after she lost control of her car on westbound Interstate 4 at Kathleen Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Melissa Sue Williamson, of Lakeland, was ejected from her vehicle and died at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt, according to a crash report.
Williamson was using an emergency lane on the north side of the highway to pass a car driven by William Otis Huggins, 69, of Lakeland, the highway patrol said.
After hitting the back of Huggins' car, Williamson lost control of her 1988 Ford. The Ford overturned, ejecting Williamson. Then the car hit a guardrail in the median and caught fire.
Huggins and a passenger were not hurt.
The wreck closed the westbound lanes of I-4 for about an hour.
