LUTZ - Tess Pokorny's love of sewing began when she was a young girl, and, as the co-owner of Scrap and Sew Inc., she's passing along the pleasure of that pastime to a new generation.
A half-dozen girls were at the shop, 17681 N. Dale Mabry Highway, one recent summer afternoon, learning how to stitch together a three-ring binder pencil case.
Pokorny moved quickly about the room, going from sewing machine to sewing machine giving directions and encouragement to the girls.
The session required a fair amount of concentration, but the girls seemed to be having a good time.
Ten-year-old Brooke Strauch said she enjoys the choices that sewing offers.
"You get to pick different colors and patterns, which makes it fun," the Land O'Lakes girl said.
Mishelle Jemison, whose daughter Lauren took the class, said learning to sew can help kids develop self-confidence.
"It gives them a sense of accomplishment. It's something they can complete and do on their own and have something to show for what they did," Jemison said.
The shop periodically offers classes, and Pokorny offers private instruction. For information, go to www.scrapandsew.com or call (813) 963-5200.
