Regarding "At Least Gore Offers A Plan" by Marsha Mercer (Other Views, Aug. 4):
It seems Al Gore is full of solutions these days and has become the face of the alternative energy movement. The trouble is, as Mercer points out, Gore is not running for anything, which is probably why he can be so honest and insist on such radical solutions.
As Gore jet sets across the world on his "I Told You So" tour, I can't help but wonder why he wasn't so solution-oriented during the eight years as our vice president. Presumably when you ride shotgun to the most powerful person in the country, you would have some influence on policy. Since any solution to this crisis is long-term, I can't help but wonder what the country would look like had Gore's solutions been implemented when he had the chance 15 years ago.
Our politicians have failed us, and only those who have stepped out of the arena - such as Gore and Newt Gingrich - are offering bold solutions. The familiarity of this problem is disturbing; three decades after the first energy crisis, the country has regressed, not progressed.
Our leaders have decided to place political rhetoric above economic stability and national security. This rhetoric has allowed perfect to be the enemy of good.
