SPRING HILL - A motorcyclist died Monday morning when he was hit by a car and thrown into a light pole near the entrance to a shopping center, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Jacob Michael Cook, 31, of Spring Hill died at the scene of the accident at U.S. 19 and Forest Oaks Boulevard, the patrol said.
The driver of the car, Angelo Lagreco, 90, was charged with violation of right of way and making an improper left turn.
Lagreco, driving a 1999 Cadillac, was headed north about 8 a.m. in the left turn lane on U.S. 19, trying to turn into Lakewood Plaza, the patrol said.
Cook was headed south when the car turned into him, hitting the motorcycle on the left side, the highway patrol said.
The impact sent Cook tumbling, and he hit a metal light pole about 50 yards south of the crash site, said Jeff Miner, a former emergency medical technician who said he witnessed the incident.
Miner said he pulled over and ran to check on the motorcyclist, who was lying on the grassy shoulder.
Miner said the man showed no signs of life.
"He never had a chance," Miner said.
Neither Lagreco nor his passenger, Hazel Lagreco, 76, both of Spring Hill, were injured, the patrol said.
Hernando Today reporter Kyle Martin contributed to this report.
