Heiress and professional celebrity Paris Hilton has a new video out - one we can all watch. This one is in response to a campaign ad from Republican presidential candidate John McCain that parodied Democratic candidate Barack Obama as a celebrity on par with Britney Spears and Hilton.
The narrator of the McCain ad says of Obama, "He's the biggest celebrity in the world," then asks, "But is he ready to lead?"
With Hilton's video, produced by funnyordie.com, the narrator begins, "He's the oldest celebrity in the world. Like super old. Old enough to remember when dancing was a sin and beer was served in a bucket." The narrator then turns the tables on McCain: "But is he ready to lead?"
Then Hilton appears, sporting a swimsuit and sprawled in a lounge chair. "Hey, America, I'm Paris Hilton and I'm a celebrity too. Only I'm not from the olden days, and I'm not promising change like that other guy. I'm just hot. But then that wrinkly, white-haired guy used me in his campaign ad, which I guess means I'm running for president." Then she sums up her energy policy in about 30 seconds:
"We can do limited offshore drilling with strict environmental oversight, while creating tax incentives to get Detroit making hybrid and electric cars. That way the offshore drilling carries us until the new technologies kick in, which will then create new jobs and energy independence. Energy crisis solved!"
That sounds pragmatic, but leasing, exploring and drilling will take far longer than passing a tax incentive for hybrids, which we already have. Still, she offers a better approach than the "drill everywhere" effort in Congress, which would do little to reduce prices or the nation's dependence on foreign oil.
Hilton's "ad" has had 6.6 million views on funnyordie.com alone as of Tuesday. She reminds us that anyone can make brief statements that sound good.
