A Pinellas County detention deputy arrested this month for possessing anabolic steroids and ecstasy has been arrested on new charges this afternoon – possession of child pornography, deputies say.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office charged Kerry Albert Hunt, 45, with five counts of sexual performance of a child. The computer disks and VHS tapes detectives seized from Hunt's Pinellas Park home contained child pornography, according to a sheriff's office news release.
This month, he was charged with two counts of possession of anabolic steroids and one count of possession of ecstasy.
He was hired by the office in January 1991 and is assigned to the detention and corrections bureau.
"I don't know if it was personal for use or what," Sgt. Jim Bordner said last week of the drugs. "There's no indication at this time that it had anything to do with the Pinellas County Jail other than his employment there."
Hunt was arrested as he arrived for work at the Pinellas County Jail in Clearwater. A search warrant subsequently was served at his Pinellas Park home.
"According to detectives, the investigation began with a tip that Hunt was using steroids and other illegal drugs," a sheriff's office news release states. "During a monthlong investigation, detectives developed probable cause for his arrest on two counts of possession of anabolic steroids."
Bordner wouldn't provide more details on the tip.
Detectives seized "a small quantity of anabolic steroids" from Hunt's home, according to the release.
Hunt, who is 6-foot-1 and weighs 260 pounds, works in the jail's north division. His was released on $6,000 bail.
Hunt remains on administrative leave with pay.
An investigation is ongoing.
