Palma Ceia Little League scored 10 runs in the sixth inning, remaining undefeated with a 16-6 win against host Kirkland National (Wash.) Little League at the Junior League World Series on Tuesday afternoon.
Leading 6-5 going to the sixth inning, Palma Ceia sent 15 hitters to the plate, with Caroline Bado scoring twice. Ashley Cozart hit a two-run triple, while Paige Pitisci and Alexis Jackson each drove in two runs in the inning.
"It was amazing," Palma Ceia manager Kevin Franklin said. "To me, I expect if from these girls, because I've seen them play over and over again. A lot of teams will go more towards a small-ball, bunting type of a game. I just rely on my heavy hitters, they just come through time and time again."
Cozart also had a solo home run in the fourth inning, while Hannah Prezlawski went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Caroline Ellis went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
The win moved Palma Ceia (2-0) into a tie for the pool lead with Maunabo, Puerto Rico, and the two teams face off today with the winner securing a place in the semifinals.
BIG LEAGUE: Citrus Park Little League fell 6-1 to host Kalamazoo (Mich.) Little League in its third pool game of the Big League World Series in Kalamazoo, Mich., but it still has a chance to make the semifinals with a win in its final game.
Citrus Park (1-2) faces Palmdale, Calif. (2-1) today, and a win would give Citrus Park an equal record and the head-to-head tiebreaker over Palmdale. The team from Brzag, Poland, could complicate matters with a win in its final game, but Citrus Park manager Al Bowman says his team is feeling optimistic about its chances.
"We know that we didn't play our best Tuesday, and that we did play our best against Puerto Rico and beat them," Bowman said. "The girls are going to spend some time preparing themselves, and they'll come out ready to play. They know it's all or nothing today, and there's been a lot of work, and having nothing to show for it is not an option for them."
