TAMPA - A new charter school in Carrollwood is taking a peaceful approach.
Taylor Peace Academy opens Monday with kindergarten through third grade; it will expand to fourth and fifth grade by 2010. Teachers are trained to offer peace education for all grades.
In addition to a traditional academic curriculum, children will learn about conflict resolution, diversity and tolerance. Students will discuss their feelings or what they have learned daily at a "peace table." Parents will receive training this fall on how to implement the approach at home, said Taylor board president Felecia Wintons.
"Then we're hoping parents take it to the workplace, then their communities, then their neighborhoods," Wintons said.
A charter school is a public school run privately. Taylor Peace grew out of an after-school tutoring program and had planned to open on Busch Boulevard. The location fell through, and the school opted to move to 10512 N. Dale Mabry Highway.
The school can be reached at (813) 374-0342.
