Parents Held In Teen Party Beating Death At Their Home

SARASOTA COUNTY - The parents whose home was the location of a birthday party July 29 that ended with the death of 18-year-old Gregory Kennedy have been arrested by the Sarasota County Sherriff's Office.

Max D. and Beverly G. Herrera are charged with child neglect, having an open house party and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. They were still in custody this afternoon.

Neighbors and deputies say at least two dozen teenagers fought in the yard and street during the party. Someone called 911, and the group scattered, leaving Kennedy bleeding and unconscious on the ground, deputies said.

Rescue personnel administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and Kennedy was flown to Bayfront Medical Center and placed on life-support.

On the morning of July 30, his mother had doctors remove him from life-support.

Michael Mendola and Simon Mihailovic have been charged with second-degree murder and denied bail.

A conviction for either could mean life in prison.
