SARASOTA - A former organizer of a church-related group for low- and moderate-income families helped himself to more than $46,000 for illegal drugs and his girlfriend, Sarasota police said.
Patrick D. Rostock, 24, stole checks from the office of Sarasota United for Responsibility, 1031 S. Euclid Ave., then forged a minister's name on 34 of them and deposited them in his account, police said.
Rostock was fired in May, but the First Congregational United Church of Christ called police last week after they got copies of checks and reconciled them.
Detectives said Rostock told them he had no idea he had taken so much money.
"He told us that he had developed a drug habit and spent the money on a girlfriend, tuition and drugs," police wrote in the arrest affidavit.
