Denise Lyn's legal career has given her exposure to civil law in a variety of arenas.
But although short on experience in criminal law, Lyn sees that as an advantage over the two others competing for an empty judge's seat in the Inverness-based Fifth Circuit's Group 3.
Criminal law "is all they've done," she said.
Lyn, 41, of Inverness, points out that a circuit judge's job is more than presiding over felony cases. There are custody battles and real estate property settlements, too, she said.
She draws her strengths in these areas both as a former Realtor and in her jobs representing the city of Inverness and as a civil law lawyer.
Lyn acquired her law degree in 1997 from the University of Florida, four years after earning a degree in business from Troy University. A decorated Air Force veteran, Lyn has held a job selling real estate in Navarre, Fla.
After four years of working for private firms in Inverness, Lyn started her own practice in 2001. She said it was her solid reputation that earned her a spot on the Florida Bar Board of Governors in 2005, a post she will hold until 2009.
Lyn stays involved in the community through a variety of posts, including past president of the Citrus County Bar Association and as a standing member of the Rotary Club.
