A man created a fake business and used Craigslist.com to scam prospective job candidates, Lakeland police say.
Sean Davis, 38, was booked into Polk County Jail on Thursday. Lakeland police charged him with scheming to defraud.
Davis used Craigslist to advertise for drivers to work for his fake company, Synergy Construction, according to a Lakeland Police Department news release.
Applicants would call Davis, and he would arrange for a meeting.
"When the applicant responded, Davis would ask them to fill out a 'hand made' application and then tell the applicant there was a 'processing fee' for the application," the release states. "Once the applicant paid the processing fee, Davis told them they would be contacted soon."
One of the applicants decided something was suspicious and figured out that Synergy Construction didn't exist, police say.
The applicant contacted police, who learned there was a Pinellas County warrant for Davis' arrest, according to the release. Jail records say that warrant was for a worthless check.
Anyone who may have been a victim should contact Detective Jim O'Neill at (863) 834-6900.
