GAINESVILLE - The weather was wet and lousy for Thursday's practice but Florida coach Urban Meyer's disposition was sunny with an extended forecast of optimism.
"You can tell from my demeanor right now that we had a heck of a practice," Meyer said shortly after sending his team off the practice field. "That was good stuff today. ... I heard that thunder and said, 'Here we go again,' and we jumped right into full-contact team scrimmage situation, third downs and we had two sets scripted and we went six sets and then we went to our two-minute drill.
"Our guys reacted and that's a good sign. There was not complaining or whining. The defensive ends were getting good pressure."
Looking for a silver lining, Meyer even reasoned that practicing in the rain was, well, good practice for when it rains.
"The negative about this weather, it's just a pain in the rear end," he said. "The positive is we're getting a lot of throwing and catching and kicking the ball in this weather. We hit two 47s 47-yard field goals at the end of practice in this weather, so it's a good sign."
RUN GATORS, RUN: The running back position earned praise from Meyer, a big change from last year when Florida never had a go-to ball carrier unless it was QB Tim Tebow.
"Guys who are really doing well - I've got to give these guys credit and their coach credit - are our running backs," Meyer said. "They are very productive right now."
Meyer then mentioned Emmanuel Moody, Chris Rainey, Jeffrey Demps, Mon Williams and Kestahn Moore.
