Newman To Join Stewart's New Team

Published: August 15, 2008

Ryan Newman, whose victory in the Daytona 500 did not spark the resurgence at Penske Racing he had hoped for, will be announced today as the second driver at Stewart-Haas Racing, the Associated Press and ESPN.com reported.

Newman will become a teammate of co-owner Tony Stewart and will drive the team's No. 4 Chevy.

Two-time Sprint Cup champion Stewart is leaving Joe Gibbs Racing after this season to become half-owner of the team formerly known as Haas CNC Racing.

Between Stewart and Newman are 45 victories, but Newman has struggled recently. He is 15th in the Sprint Cup standings, with two top-five finishes.

Newman announced in July that he was leaving Penske Racing, his only employer in NASCAR, at the end of the season.

The Associated Press and ESPN.com cited unnamed sources in saying Stewart has hired Newman. But Stewart Haas Racing has scheduled a news conference for today at Michigan International Speedway.
