TAMPA - When University of South Florida DE George Selvie was selected to the Playboy All-America team, some of his teammates asked if got to meet any playmates during the team's photo shoot in May.
"They thought I was at the Playboy mansion," said Selvie, who was flown to Phoenix with the other Playboy All-Americans. "I told them it wasn't at the mansion, it was at a resort.
"They were like, 'Man, what kind of Playboy All-America team is it if you don't get to see the playmates?'"
One of the oldest and most prestigious preseason All-American teams, Playboy's 52nd annual team is featured in the September issue, which hits newsstands today.
USF's first Playboy All-American, Selvie also is the only player from a Florida school on this year's 26-player team. Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, of Florida, turned down an invitation to be considered for the team.
"I was honored just to be part of that prestigious team because they have been doing it for a long time," Selvie said.
Selvie's parents had mixed emotions about him being selected. His mother is a minister.
"My dad didn't care," Selvie said. "He was like 'for real? You going to the mansion?' He liked it; my mom, not too much.
"Playboy said they'd send a copy to the house, back home in Pensacola. My mom will send it back to me. She said she's not going to look at it, but then she might throw it away, so I might have to get my own in Tampa. When I look at it I'll say I'm just reading the articles."
FRESHMEN STAND OUT: With nearly two weeks of training camp complete, two freshman receivers are making a push toward getting in the playing rotation.
While receiver is one of the team's deepest positions, Daniel Bryant (6-2, 185) and Patrick Richardson (6-0, 175) have impressed WR coach Mike Canales.
"The most important thing is to find out which of the young kids can step up and help us," Canales said. "Bryant and Richardson are really making big plays. They are pushing the older kids."
"I told the upperclassmen point blank if one kid beats them out and is ready to play, I'm going to play them."
ODDS AND ENDS: Sophomore Quincy Okolie (shoulder), who was scheduled to move from defensive end to tight end, will miss the entire season, Leavitt said. The school will look into applying for a medical hardship for Okolie.
