TAMPA - A woman has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority, claiming that when she was pregnant with twins in 2006, an incident on a HART bus caused her to lose her babies.
The driver of the bus closed the door on Chiquavia Bankston as she boarded the vehicle, according to the complaint filed July 31 in civil court by Bankston's attorney, Garett Raines.
Bankston, who was 20 weeks pregnant, was pinned in the door and started feeling abdominal and back pains when she sat down, the complaint said. Two days later, on Aug. 5, 2006, Bankston was diagnosed with a ruptured amniotic membrane, the complaint said.
On Aug. 11, she went into labor at Tampa General Hospital. One baby was stillborn and its twin died 10 minutes after the delivery, the complaint said.
Officials with the transit authority could not be reached Thursday for comment.
