Big Plays Highlight First Full Scrimmage
TALLAHASSEE - After the first full scrimmage, it's still uncertain who the starting quarterback will be for Florida State in 2008.
What did seem certain at Doak Campbell Stadium on Saturday was that whoever wins the job will be sharing the huddle with some big-play threats.
During the scripted scrimmage, which included red-zone, third-down and goal-line segments, the FSU offense produced seven plays that went for 30 yards or more - including a 61-yard TD pass from senior Drew Weatherford to Greg Carr and a 40-yard TD run by senior Antone Smith.
"Explosive plays," offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher said. "All those 10-, 12-play drives, they're hard to make in a game. ... You've got to have guys that make people miss, break a tackle, make a throw in a hole, ad-lib. You know, do something. And that's what I was excited most about."
Weatherford finished the scrimmage unofficially 6-of-12 for 116 yards, one TD and one interception. Sophomore Christian Ponder was 11-of-21 for 200 yards and a score, and redshirt sophomore D'Vontrey Richardson was 8-of-15 for 103 yards. E.J. Manuel, who guided the third-team offense, was 6-of-8 for 84 yards.
NO-SHOW IN AP POLL: FSU was nowhere to be found in the Associated Press poll released Saturday. According to the FSU media guide, it is the first time since 1982 that the Noles were not ranked in the AP's preseason poll.
