ATLANTA - Tom Glavine went back on the Atlanta Braves' disabled list Friday, a day after the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner was hit hard in his first start since June 10.
Trying to overcome an elbow injury, Glavine gave up seven runs, seven hits and four walks in an 11-7 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night. The loss may have ended his season, and he has not said how the setback could affect his hopes of pitching in 2009.
The 42-year-old Glavine, who has a torn flexor tendon in his left elbow, sat out two months while hoping to avoid surgery. He experienced more discomfort on the mound, resulting in decreased velocity.
YANKEES: Designated hitter-left fielder Hideki Matsui hit a solo homer in his first minor-league rehab game with Single-A Tampa on Friday.
Matsui, on the 15-day DL since June 27 with an injured left knee, went 1-for-3 as the DH.
