The recent revelations about Tampa Bay Water's Bill Young Reservoir confirm what many have known all along: Tampa Bay Water cannot be trusted. They have misused the authority given to them by the partnership agreement. They have been fiscally irresponsible with our tax dollars and lied to us about it time and time again!
We already know the desalination plant was poorly engineered and poorly constructed. They've spent millions trying to fix it. Now we learn that the new reservoir was also poorly engineered and poorly constructed and may have to be drained and closed for major repairs. I'm sure it will cost millions.
In the meantime, Tampa Bay Water wants to build a second reservoir and fill it by increasing its withdrawals from the Hillsborough and Alafia rivers while augmenting the rivers' flows with treated sewage, aka reclaimed wastewater. That's right - with reclaimed waste water containing high levels of nitrogen, PPCPs and pharmaceuticals.
It's time to put a "stop" on the blank check the partnership agreement gave Tampa Bay Water. They are in default. It's time for the Legislature to step in and clean house!
