SARASOTA - 6:48 a.m. It's been a breezy and dry start to the day for much of Sarasota County this morning.
Folks who heeded storm warnings filled up shelters late Monday night. Sarasota County and the American Red Cross checked in more than 300 people, 14 pets and another 200 evacuees with special health needs. Emergency managers consider that a pretty good response.
The post office and county administration building downtown boarded windows and closed for business today along with all other government buildings, making for some quiet streets.
As sleep-deprived Emergency Management Chief Ed McCrane looks around, he sees a good dry run. McCrane says with several weeks to go in the hurricane season, Fay forced folks to dust off their storm plans.
McCrane plans to hold a news briefing this morning as the EOC discusses plans to start scaling back staffing.
