NBC had 26.8 million viewers Sunday on the first day of Beijing Olympics AP (that's After Phelps). That's still a little higher than the comparable night in Athens four years ago.
Ratings are expected to go down a bit during the second week with few live events available in prime time.
An average of 31.1 million people watched the Olympics on Saturday, peaking at 39.9 million during the half hour when Phelps won his record eighth gold medal. It was the most-watched program on Saturday night for NBC since an "Empty Nest" episode in February 1990.
