Red Grouper Bite Improving

Published: August 19, 2008

GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Randy Rochelle.

Either the offshore mangrove snapper bite was slow and no one wanted to talk about it, or the bite was red hot and no one wanted to talk about it.

All the good reports I got over the weekend regarding mangrove snapper came from anglers fishing inside the bay. Those fishing around the Gandy Bridge, the Skyway Bridge and the rock piles along the ship channel reported a hot bite and easy limits.

Small white bait fished on light spinning tackle proved deadly for the mangos.

Offshore, the red grouper bite just seems to get better. The hot depth is 90 to 110 feet from due west of John's Pass southward.

Live bait, cut bait or jigs tip with squid, it just doesn't seem to matter; if you drop it they'll eat it.

Amberjack continue to chew as well. Anglers fishing wrecks from 130 feet and out are finding it easy to box a limit of these hard-fighting bruisers.

Those making the long run offshore are being rewarded with dolphin and wahoo. The wahoo bite has been hot with some anglers catching three or four fish a trip.

Fishing near the Steps over the weekend, Arik Bergerman and crew boxed a number of wahoo and dolphin, released one blue marlin and lost a white marlin.
