PALM BEACH COUNTY – Two tornados touched down this morning in Palm Beach County, damaging a business and a home, but no injuries were reported as Tropical Storm Fay moved across the state.
The tornadoes were reported in Wellington and Palm Beach Gardens.
The tornado in Wellington touched down early today, ripping the roof off the Palm Beach Equine Sports Complex. The second tornado in Palm Beach Gardens damaged a carport roof at a residence, according to John Jamason, special projects manager for Palm Beach County Public Affairs.
Jamason said no horses were injured at the sports complex.
The storm, which made landfall south of Marco Island in Collier County about 5 a.m., produced minimal, localized flooding in Palm Beach County and left 16,000 people without power. Jamason said that wasn't too bad considering the county has about 1 million residents.
One emergency shelter opened in Belle Glade, a community along Lake Okeechobee, will stay open until 7 a.m. Wednesday.
"It was pretty much exactly what we expected," Jamason said. "It was a lot of rain and a decent amount of wind overnight."
