10:08 a.m. While South Florida took the brunt of Tropical Storm Fay, volunteers and staff from the American Red Cross Tampa Bay Chapter remained poised to jump into action if trouble arises locally.
"We're basically on stand down right now," spokeswoman Abi Weaver said. "We're on alert just in case there is any wind damage or flooding."
Residents wrestling with those weather-related issues can call the Red Cross, which is open 24 hours, at (813) 348-4820 or go to the agency's website at www.redcrosstbc.org .
Further south, the American Red Cross had 29 shelters opened with about 1,200 people using them, Weaver said.
