TAMPA - An off-duty Tampa Fire Rescue driver was arrested early this morning on charges he was driving while intoxicated.
Rodney Shelby Brown, 47, was arrested by Hillsborough County deputies at McIntosh Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard about midnight.
A breath test determined Brown's blood-alcohol level to be 0.117 and 0.114, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office jail Web site. Florida law presumes a driver impaired with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08.
Brown is a driver/engineer and works at Fire Station No. 22 at Tampa International Airport, said Capt. Bill Wade of Tampa Fire Rescue. Brown has been employed by the city since February 1983.
Wade said Brown was not driving a fire truck and was not on duty when he was arrested.
He will be referred to a city employee assistance program and will not drive a fire truck until the situation is resolved by the courts, Wade said.
Brown was scheduled to start his shift at 7:30 a.m. today but instead took a sick day, Wade said.
According to records, he was still at the Orient Road Jail this morning. Bail was set at $500.
