The blind sampling of 6,000 glasses of wine varieties - the premise for this book - revealed one dominating truth: When the label and price are hidden, most everyday drinkers prefer cheaper wines to more expensive wines. This book chronicles that search for palate truthiness and offers editors' picks for the best-tasting brands that may or may not have vulgar words in their names.

"The Spice Merchant's Daughter," by Christina Arokiasamy (Clarkson Potter, $29.95)

Arokiasamy grew up in Malaysia as the Indian daughter of a mother who was constantly buying, washing and drying spices. Her book is part recollection of that time in her childhood when the spices of Southeast Asia dominated her life, and partly a cookbook that takes readers for a tour of those flavors. The recipes for Masala Shrimp and Lamb Korma look especially tasty.
