Kickball Coach Charged With Raping, Threatening Player, 21

TAMPA - A community kickball coach is accused of raping a 21-year-old kickball player and threatening her not to tell anyone, Tampa police said.

Andre Javon Newton, 26, of 5618 Ashmont Court, Apartment B, was held without bail at Orient Road Jail this morning. Police arrested him Tuesday on warrants charging him with felony sexual battery and felony witness tampering.

According to police, Newton visited the woman at home July 30 and asked her to provide money for kickball uniforms. As she went into the bedroom, he followed her, pushed her onto the bed and raped her, police said.

Afterward, Newton called the woman's cell phone and "made threats against her life" if she reported what happened to authorities, police spokeswoman Janelle McGregor said.
