ST. PETERSBURG - A 39-year-old man was shot this morning during a home invasion after he threw a ceramic mug at the intruder, St. Petersburg police said.
The man's name is not being printed by TBO.com because the intruder has not been arrested.
At 2:48 a.m., the man, who was house-sitting his brother's home in the 400 block of 89th Avenue North, was awakened by the intruder, St. Petersburg police spokesman George Kajtsa said.
The intruder had tried to force his way into the home through two doors but was unsuccessful, Kajtsa said. Then he entered through a kitchen window, the spokesman said.
That's when the housesitter heard the intruder, Kajtsa said. After the man threw the mug at the intruder, the intruder fired at least two rounds at him with a shotgun full of birdshot, Kajtsa said.
The victim was shot in the upper body and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center for what were described as non-life-threatening injuries, Kajtsa said.
After the intruder left, either he or unknown accomplices fired at the house from the outside with a 9 mm handgun, Kajtsa said.
