Carl Edwards has won half of the eight races run this year on 11/2- and 2-mile tracks, a show of championship strength given that half of the 10 Chase races are run on intermediate tracks. Two of Edwards' five Sprint Cup victories have come in the past three races.
With only three regular-season races left, it's safe to say everyone from 18th-place Jamie McMurray back is out of contention for a Chase berth. Among those out of the hunt are former champion Kurt Busch and fellow former Chase qualifier Elliott Sadler.
"I feel like I do a form of that when I'm driving my street car, because I hate to give those guys any more of my money than necessary ... to the third-world countries or whoever has all the oil." - Greg Biffle, when asked if he employs a set of techniques called hyper-miling to conserve fuel.
•Question: Where would Ford be in the Sprint Cup series this season without Edwards? Answer: Winless.
•Joe Gibbs Racing reportedly will announce 18-year-old Joey Logano as Tony Stewart's replacement Monday. Logano could make his Sprint Cup debut in September.
•Austin Dillon, the 18-year-old grandson of team owner Richard Childress, is scheduled to make his Nationwide Series debut at Richmond on Sept. 5.
