Cast-Iron Stoves Were Hot Kids' Toys

Published: August 21, 2008

I would like information about my toy stove. It is marked "Royal" on the front and "Kenton Brand" on the back. Accessories include two pans, kettle, teakettle and flat iron.

J.B., Richmond, Va.

Kenton Hardware Co. first made cast-iron toys in the 1890s. Famous for its toy banks, stoves and horse-drawn vehicles, it went through hard times during the Depression and World War II and closed in 1952.

This is a nice example of a Kenton cast-iron toy stove made around the turn of the 20th century. Kenton produced several toy stove models, including the Royal, which probably is one of its better quality toys.

Assuming yours is in excellent condition except for minor blemishes and wear, with no cracks, it would retail for at least $395.

Antique cast-iron toy stoves have been heavily reproduced. Neophyte collectors should educate themselves before purchasing one.

I inherited my small chest from my mother and grandmother. It's painted red and black with gold printing on the front that reads "B.Y. 1893." I would like to know more about it, including its value.

B.E, St. Johns, Fla.

This is a great little blanket chest, despite being made in the late 19th century. The reason it's great is that it appears to have the original paint decoration. Originality adds to value.

Blanket chests, often called six-board chests, have been around for at least 250 years. They were popular in America from 1750 to 1900 because they were so useful.

This chest, with dovetailed construction and a till or interior compartment, appears to be made of poplar. It probably was made in Pennsylvania or Ohio. It would retail for about $425.

If it had been stripped and refinished, it would sell for $100.
