ST. LOUIS - St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson ended his holdout on Wednesday while his agent continues negotiations for a new contract.
The 235-pound Jackson, a bruising runner and the centerpiece of the team's offense, is entering the final year of a five-year, $7 million deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004. His prolonged stand perhaps reflected a realization of his value to an attack that averaged only 16 points last season while going 3-13.
The Rams cut off negotiations in late July on the first day of training camp after Jackson's agent, Eugene Parker, turned down a deal the team said would have put Jackson in the top echelon at his position.
At that time, Jay Zygmunt, the Rams' president of football operations, said there would be no further talks until the running back reported.
Bengals Players Hoping Henry Avoids Trouble
CINCINNATI - Chris Henry's return hasn't made much of an impact on his Cincinnati Bengals teammates, who have tried many times already to help the troubled receiver change his life.
Now, they say it's entirely up to Henry to make good on his latest, unexpected chance.
"There's not too much you can do, to be honest with you," receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh said. "He has to do it himself. That's how I see it. I've talked to him. He knows what he needs to do, and hopefully he'll do it."
Owner Mike Brown gave Henry a two-year contract Tuesday, undercutting his head coach and undermining his own crackdown on repeat offenders. Brown released Henry after his fifth arrest in the offseason, saying the team was finished with him.
Then, he brought him back despite the objections of Coach Marvin Lewis.
BILLS: Quarterback Trent Edwards has a swollen bruise above his right kneecap that forced him to miss practice, a day after he knocked knees in a collision with running back Marshawn Lynch.
BRONCOS: Five-time Pro Bowl center Tom Nalen is headed back to the operating table.
The only player left from Denver's Super Bowl teams of the late 1990s, Nalen needs another operation on his left knee after surgery in June failed to put him back on the field without pain.
CHIEFS: Linebacker Demorrio Williams likely will miss the final two preseason games with a broken bone in his right hand, but expects to be ready for the Sept. 7 opener at New England.
COWBOYS: Coach Wade Phillips said that Adam "Pacman" Jones will start at left corner Friday night in the team's preseason home opener against Houston.
Jones, who missed the 2007 season while serving an NFL suspension and has not yet been reinstated for the regular season, has been working primarily on the right side behind Anthony Henry. But Phillips said Jones "has shown he can play. He needs to play some more."
Jones will start ahead of former University of South Florida corner Mike Jenkins, a rookie who was drafted No. 25 overall by Dallas.
DOLPHINS: Traded cornerback Travis Daniels to the Browns for an undisclosed draft pick. Daniels played in all 16 games last season for Miami, including five starts. He had 27 tackles and an interception.
EAGLES: Wide receiver Kevin Curtis will have surgery today to repair a sports hernia and likely will miss the start of the regular season.
RAVENS: Troy Smith will be the starting quarterback for Saturday's preseason game against the Rams, Coach John Harbaugh said.
SEAHAWKS: Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck did not practice again because of a stiff back, and he also may miss his second consecutive preseason game against San Diego.
