TAMPA - A Tampa man drove through a school zone Wednesday with a blood-alcohol level nearly five times the legal limit, Hillsborough County deputies say.
Deputies arrested Michael Trotter Shaffer, 28, at 2:05 p.m. Wednesday.
Breath tests determined Shaffer's blood-alcohol level to be 0.376 and 0.367, deputies say. Florida law presumes a driver impaired with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08.
On this school year's second day, Shaffer drove through a school zone at 1806 E. Bearss Ave., his radio blaring, a sheriff's office news release states.
Deputy Michael Parks, who was monitoring traffic at Mort Elementary School, stopped Shaffer.
Parks noticed Shaffer was impaired, deputies say.
Shaffer was charged with driving under the influence, driving with license revoked-habitual offender, battery of a law enforcement officer and obstructing or opposing an officer.
"The driver then produced a previous DUI citation when he was asked for his driver's license," the release states. "His license is revoked. Shaffer had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath, slurred speech and difficulty exiting the vehicle."
Deputies handcuffed Shaffer. Shaffer didn't cooperate and tried to kick out a patrol car's windows, according to the release.
He was taken to Tampa General Hospital to be medically cleared before being taken to Orient Road Jail.
Shaffer, of 1250 Skipper Road, Apt. 30, was booked into the jail about 8 p.m. Wednesday.
His bail was set at $5,000, and he has been released.
