TAMPA - Police have arrested a man they say forced his way into a home with four other men this morning and was shot after he and a resident wrestled over a gun, authorities said.
Alvourne Williams, 24, of 1610 River Drive, Tampa, is being treated at Tampa General Hospital. He is charged with burglary of an occupied dwelling and two counts of aggravated assault with a firearm.
According to the Tampa Police Department, Oscar Gainous and Erica Wright were in bed sleeping about 4:30 a.m. when they heard the front door of their Tampa apartment kicked in. Two men entered the bedroom, and Gainous was taken downstairs. Wright was held in the bedroom.
Wright began to struggle with Williams, and the gun he was holding went off, police said. The four men downstairs ran away after hearing the gunshot. Gainous ran upstairs and wrestled with Williams, took the gun and shot at Williams, who jumped out a window.
Williams bled extensively, and the blood trail led investigators to an apartment about half a mile away, police said. Detectives questioned Williams and noticed what appeared to be a gunshot wound near an armpit.
Police are searching for the other men. Williams was expected to be booked into Orient Road Jail after treatment at the hospital, police said.
