Girl, 1, Injured By Day Care Provider, Pinellas Deputies Say

A licensed home day care provider seriously injured a 1-year-old girl, possibly by shaking her, Pinellas County deputies say.
Stephanie M. Spurgeon, 37, of Palm Harbor, has been charged with aggravated child abuse.
Spurgeon, of 830 Edgehill Drive, was arrested today.
"Family members told detectives the child was alert and happy when dropped off, but sluggish and sleepy when she was picked up," a sheriff's office news release states. "She quickly became unresponsive Thursday afternoon and was taken to a local hospital. She is being treated for serious injuries, detectives say, which are consistent with being shaken or a similar trauma."
Crimes Against Children detectives are investigating the case, which is ongoing.
