GAINESVILLE With Florida still searching for a second defensive tackle to play alongside Lawrence Marsh, junior college transfer Troy Epps' decision to begin school and practice during the spring may become vital to the Gators success.
The Coffeyville Community College transfer forced five fumbles as a sophomore, but in making the transition from junior college to the SEC a few months earlier, Epps saved himself from being a non-factor this season.
"They'd be non-functional people if they weren't here in the spring," Coach Urban Meyer said of Florida's transfers. "Epps, without spring football, wouldn't be in the mix to be one of our starters."
Epps has gained about 30 pounds since joining the Gators in January. That coupled with the South Carolina native's improved play has earned him a nickname among his teammates - "space-eater."
"I guess it's because I've got a wide frame so they say it's hard to go around me," said Epps on how he received his nickname."
CUNNINGHAM MAKES JUMP: Jermaine Cunningham enjoyed a productive sophomore season, recording 64 tackles and 6.5 sacks.
With DE Derrick Harvey's departure to the NFL there will be even more pressure on the Cunningham to lead the defensive line in the same fashion.
According to defensive line coach Dan McCarney, Cunningham certainly has made the leap.
"He's learned to use his hands more," McCarney said. "He was a solid player last year, but he needs to be more now. I'm not buying solid in 2008. My expectations are that he's a lot better than average and solid.
"He needs to be more of a game-changing player. I think using his hands more and going against some really good offensive lineman have really helped him. He's really improved."
