Deputies broke down a door and shot a man to death as he was stabbing a woman inside a south Manatee County home this morning, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.
The deputies were responding to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance when they arrived at the house and heard a woman inside crying and yelling, "He's stabbing me. He's stabbing me," Sheriff W. Brad Steube said.
A deputy fired a single shot, killing the man, Steube said. The woman was taken to a hospital.
Their names have not been released. The nature of their relationship was not immediately clear, Steube said.
The incident occurred at 7710 Westmoreland Drive, a waterfront neighborhood. A home next to the single-story ranch home is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Neighbors said the occupants of the home do not own it.
The 911 call was made by a woman about 11 a.m., Steube said.
Deputies at first found no sign of a disturbance but heard the woman as they approached the door of the home.
British visitors Mark Newbold and his family were returning to their rental home in the neighborhood when they saw sheriff's vehicles at the home where the attack occurred.
Newbold said he heard a loud bang from inside and then saw firetrucks and ambulances pull up.
Soon after, he saw people being carried from the home.
