TAMPA - A Tampa man drove through a school zone Wednesday with an excessive blood-alcohol level, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies say.

Deputies arrested Michael Trotter Shaffer, 28, at 2:05 p.m. Wednesday. Breath tests determined Shaffer's blood-alcohol level to be 0.376 and 0.367, deputies said. Florida law presumes a driver impaired with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08.

On this school year's second day, Shaffer drove through a school zone at 1806 E. Bearss Ave., his radio blaring, a sheriff's office news release stated.

Deputy Michael Parks, who was monitoring traffic at Mort Elementary School, stopped Shaffer. Parks noticed Shaffer was impaired, the release said.

Shaffer was charged with driving under the influence, driving with license revoked-habitual offender, battery of a law enforcement officer and obstructing or opposing an officer.

"The driver then produced a previous DUI citation when he was asked for his driver's license," the release stated. "His license is revoked."

Deputies handcuffed Shaffer. Shaffer did not cooperate and tried to kick out a patrol car's windows, according to the release.

He was taken to Tampa General Hospital to be medically cleared before being taken to Orient Road Jail.

Shaffer, of 1250 Skipper Road, was booked into the jail about 8 p.m. Wednesday.

His bail was set at $5,000, and he has been released.
