Storm Doesn't Stop The Bite

Published: August 23, 2008

GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Mel Berman.

With the presence of persistent Tropical Storm Fay this week, most anglers were left ashore taking care of their chores at home. But many skippers who braved the challenging weather as Fay approached did some serious catching.

"The bite on Monday was awesome," kayak guide Neil Taylor said. "We caught several big breeder reds that show up this time of year, working mangrove edges in the North Pinellas area."

Now, let's hope Fay finally leaves the Florida peninsula this weekend, and we could be looking at improved fishing conditions heading into next week. Also, with water temperatures slowly dropping, the enthusiasm of the fish bite should pick up.
Captain Dave Rieumont said before the storm arrived, the trout bite was best working the shallows early before the water warmed up around Fred Howard Park.

"I start with a topwater plug and switch to jigs as I move into deeper water by the afternoon." Rieumont cautions those drifting the flats not to run their boats over productive water.

"Take a wide berth out and then swing around the area you just drifted. Failing to do this may shut down the bite."

If you're seeking Spanish mackerel, many mostly smaller macks are available around the Sunshine Skyway. Clark Spoons, Doc's Jigs, or any kind of shiny lure you can throw out and reel in fast should work.
