The University of South Florida held its first classes 48 years ago, and only now has what it considers a true student union.
When students start their fall classes Monday, they'll have a new four-story Marshall Center with a 57-foot atrium. It is named for Phyllis P. Marshall, former student union director.
There are computer centers, study lounges, nine eateries, a bar and grill, a theater and ballroom, meeting rooms, conference centers, and even a "serenity" room.
The new building is adjacent to the old Marshall Center, which USF President Judy Genshaft says was never meant to be a student union. It will be demolished by December and a plaza and amphitheater built in its place.
