Weather Woes Slow Fishing

GO FISHING is a daily look at the area fishing scene through the eyes of local charter boat captains and fishing guides. Today: Mark Cook.

With Tropical Storm Fay creating havoc throughout Central Florida last week, fishing trips came to an abrupt halt for the most part.

While not many folks were braving the winds and rains, the water falling from the sky has been a huge benefit to area lakes, pits and ponds. The Kissimmee chain, Lake Okeechobee and some state-owned phosphate pits in Polk County such as Teneroc and Hardee Lakes were the big winners with Fay.

On Saturday, things began to clear up somewhat and with the influx of fresh cool water, the bass bite turned on in the private phosphate pits.

The Balm duo of Ronald Davis and Joel Capps caught their limit in a Fin and Feather pit working buzzbaits early and spinnerbaits and plastic worms later in the day. The 20 bass they caught averaged 2 pounds, with the biggest weighing in at a little more than 4 pounds.

The catfish bite was going strong at Medard Reservoir and also on Lake Arbukle before the recent storm and the extra water should only help things. Rivers or small creeks flowing in will bring bait, which will bring the catfish or bass looking for an easy meal.
Lake Kissimmee also was producing good fish with bluegill really strong after this month's full moon. Lots of limits were reported by anglers fishing crickets near Bird and Brahma Islands, and bass anglers also were finding schooling bass feeding top water early in the mornings on Lake Toho near Shingle Creek.
