Giants Contact Strahan's Agent About Comeback

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The New York Giants are interested in luring Michael Strahan out of retirement after losing Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora to a season-ending knee injury Saturday night.

The Super Bowl champions contacted the representative for the seven-time Pro Bowl defensive end on Monday to gauge Strahan's interest in returning for a 16th season.

"They want to see if there is any interest there," agent Tony Agnone said. "I have to talk to Michael."

Strahan is on vacation in Greece. Agnone said he has not talked to him about the Giants' inquiry.

Strahan turned down a $6 million contract offer in the offseason. He then signed with Fox Sports to work on its NFL pregame show.

With Strahan's status uncertain, the Giants shuffled their defense Monday and moved Mathias Kiwanuka back to end from his strongside linebacker spot.

2-Point Conversion Sends Chargers Past Seahawks

SAN DIEGO - Backup quarterback Billy Volek threw a 2-point conversion pass to Malcom Floyd in the fourth quarter, giving the San Diego Chargers an 18-17 preseason win against the Seattle Seahawks.

Volek's lob to Floyd followed a 1-yard touchdown run by rookie Jacob Hester that pulled the Chargers to within 17-16 with 2:30 left in the game. The 6-foot-5 Floyd out-jumped Omare Lowe, a 6-1 cornerback, near the left sideline in the end zone for the go-ahead score.
Philip Rivers completed 11 of 21 passes for 143 yards, driving the Chargers to the 1 yard line on their first possession before a bad snap out of the shotgun formation by backup center Jeremy Newberry was recovered by Seattle.

Two-time rushing champion LaDainian Tomlinson was again out of the lineup for the Chargers, but Darren Sproles filled in with 102 yards on 13 carries, including a 1-yard TD.

Seattle's Charlie Frye completed 19 of 30 passes for 219 yards with touchdown passes to Nate Burleson and Jordan Kent.

Favre Wants To Play In Final Preseason Game

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Brett Favre has never worried about getting injured, and he's not about to start.

The veteran quarterback wants to play in the New York Jets' preseason finale Thursday at Philadelphia, and will speak to Coach Eric Mangini about getting in for a series or two. But if he's relegated to clipboard duty, Favre promises he won't be too disappointed.

CHIEFS: Signed free-agent kicker Jay Feely (Jesuit High) to a one-year contract. The former Jesuit High standout played for Miami last season, converting 21 of 23 field goals and all 26 PAT attempts.

COLTS: Quarterback Peyton Manning might be activated by Indianapolis today, although the two-time NFL Most Valuable Player is not expected to play in the team's final preseason game Thursday.

Manning got limited light work in practice last week and was on the sideline, but not in uniform, during Sunday night's 20-7 loss to Buffalo.

DOLPHINS: Coach Tony Sparano couldn't help but have a little fun Monday when he finally announced the winner of the team's drawn-out quarterback competition.

"It's Chad," he said, chuckling.

Chad Pennington or Chad Henne?

"Pennington," he added. "I think the guy will do a great job of managing our team. And the team has responded really well to him, and that's where we are going."

PATRIOTS: Tom Brady says he'll be ready to play in New England's season opener against Kansas City.

Brady has been nursing a right foot injury and hasn't played in any of the Patriots three exhibition games. The quarterback said that even if he sits out the final exhibition game Thursday night at the New York Giants, he'll be ready for the game against the Chiefs on Sept. 7.

RAIDERS: Safety Jarrod Cooper was waived and intends to retire. Oakland also waived former Bucs defensive end Greg Spires.

STEELERS: Receiver-kick returner Jeremy Bloom, the former World Cup skiing star and two-time Olympian, was among three players cut.

Bloom, a fifth-round pick by Philadelphia in 2006, was trying to make the Steelers as a kick returner.
