BOSTON - Baseball Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski was released from a hospital Tuesday, one week after having triple bypass surgery.
The former Red Sox outfielder had surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital after experiencing chest pains. His discharge was announced by team spokesman John Blake.
Yastrzemski, the last player to hit for the Triple Crown by leading the AL in batting average, homers and RBIs in 1967, turned 69 last Friday.
His family released a statement after the surgery saying it was "a complete success."
Cubs Bidders Narrowed To 5
NEW YORK - Tribune Co. CEO Sam Zell said that the media conglomerate has chosen five bidders for the Chicago Cubs.
Zell said during a conference call with lenders that separate bids have been made on storied Wrigley Field, the nation's second-oldest baseball stadium. The team's sale must be approved by Major League Baseball.
"We hope to have a deal to MLB by the end of the year," said Zell, the real estate mogul who led a $8.2 billion buyout of the company last year. He said he expects "rapid" approval.
Tribune is selling the ballpark, baseball team and a 25 percent interest in a local sports channel to raise cash to pay down $13.4 billion in debt, mostly related to the buyout.
RED SOX: J.D. Drew has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain, leaving the team without their All-Star right fielder heading into a tight pennant race.
The move was made Tuesday, retroactive to Aug. 18, and it opened a roster spot for right-hander Tim Wakefield. The knuckleballer was activated from the DL to start the opener of a three-game series against New York, Boston's final regular-season visit to Yankee Stadium.
