TAMPA - John "Junior" Gotti has arrived in Florida and will appear in federal court in Tampa today.
Gotti is scheduled to be arraigned this afternoon on charges handed up by a federal grand jury in Tampa that accused him of participating in Gambino family-related slayings of three men in New York: George Grosso, who was killed Dec. 20, 1988, in Queens; Louis DiBono, killed Oct. 4, 1990, in the World Trade Center parking garage; and Bruce John Gotterup, killed Nov. 20, 1991, at Rockaway Beach & Boardwalk in Queens. Gotti also is charged with trafficking in cocaine.
The Gambino family once was ruled by Gotti's father, the late John J. Gotti, known as the "Dapper Don" for his expensive suits.
Gotti was arrested Aug. 5 in New York and left the state about two weeks ago in the custody of U.S. marshals, taking what his attorney called a "circuitous route" to Florida.
Attorney Charles Carnesi said Wednesday that he has been told Gotti has arrived in the Middle District of Florida, but he didn't know where Gotti is being held. The Middle District covers a large portion of the state, from Fort Myers to the Georgia state line.
Federal inmates awaiting trial ordinarily are confined in one of several county jails, including facilities in Hillsborough, Pinellas and Citrus counties. Some inmates are held at Coleman Federal Correctional Complex in Sumter County.
Carnesi said he plans to ask for a change of venue, hoping to have the case moved to New York, where the majority of the incidents covered by the indictment occurred.
New York media reported Wednesday that Gotti's grandmother, Philomena, died Tuesday at age 96.
Carnesi said he did not think his client knew about his grandmother's death. The attorney did not know whether they were close.
