A scheduling glitch has pushed up the Zephyrhills football season opener.
Instead of the Bulldogs having the first week of play as their open date as was originally scheduled, the squad will face Miami Gulliver Prep on Sept. 5 at Zephyrhills.
According to Bulldogs athletic director Craig Millburn, Gulliver Prep will play Doral Academy on Oct. 17 and Zephyrhills will move its open date to Oct. 17.
Last season, Gulliver Prep beat Zephyrhills 20-7 at Bulldogs Stadium.
Milburn found out the news Wednesday morning and had most of the issues ironed out by the afternoon.
"It's been quite a few phone calls. Having to call the booster club to make sure the concession stand can go, working with my business manager making sure the ticket-takers are there," Milburn said. "I kind of had been taking it easy on home game plans because our first home game really was not until the last week in September Sept. 26 against Sunlake.
"So all of a sudden checking the lights and the P.A. system, it's kind of a major thing, making sure your field is ready for that first ballgame."
In addition to sound checks with the public address system and making sure the field is lined and in game-ready condition, Milburn also must attain officials for the game.
The scheduling change also provides a tough stretch of games with Gulliver Prep, followed by Mitchell and Land O' Lakes.
"Playing a team like that should make you a little bit more prepared for your district and conference games," Milburn said. "They're a very good ball team."
The only issue Milburn has run into is the team's program. It won't be ready in time.
"That's not the end of the world," he said. "We can at least give rosters out."
