TAMPA - Police staking out Watermans Crossing apartments say they found themselves targeted Wednesday morning by a rock-tossing teen who was letting people know the officers were there undercover.
As police conducted undercover surveillance of the apartments because of a recent rash of auto burglaries, Deonta D. Lewis, 19, saw them, according to a report that describes what happened:
Lewis started telling people in the area that the police were working undercover.
Then he started throwing rocks at the unmarked police car.
Police chased him and he ran away, eluding arrest, but police found an address for his mother and went to her residence at 1605 Sand Ridge Drive in Tampa. They found Lewis asleep on a floor.
Lewis was arrested without incident and charged with throwing a deadly missile -- a felony -- and resisting arrest without violence, a misdemeanor.
He was taken to Orient Road Jail, and bail was set at $8,000.
